This morning, Patently Apple posted a report titled “Ming-Chi Kuo Reiterates Apple’s use of Pancake Lenses for their HMD while pointing to an economical second-gen HMD and more.” Another report has now surfaced claiming that Samsung Display has received requests from Apple to develop a MicroOLED panel.

Back in September 2021 Patently Apple posted a report titled “Apple Intends to test a next-gen Micro-LED Display for a VR Device with 3,000ppi Resolution.” The report noted that Apple had requested a sample of laser patterning FMM from the APS, a South Korean company. Apple reportedly requested a resolution of 3000ppi (pixels per inch) to meet specifications for their future mixed reality headset.

The Elec reports today that with “Apple is expected to launch a mixed reality headset with MicroOLED next year as will Meta, there is pressure on Samsung Display to appease its customers.

Chief rival LG Display also has plans to supply Apple with MicroOLED, another factor that will pressure Samsung Display to develop related technologies to not fall behind.

LG Display is planning to place orders for equipment needed to manufacture MicroOLED for Cupertino.

Sony is the first supplier of MicroOLED for the iPhone maker’s first MR device. It will first supply a conventional OLED panel for Apple’s first MR device but attempt to supply MicroOLED for the follow-up.” For more, read the full report from The Elec.

Patently Apple first reported on this back on June 13 in a report titled “Rumor: Apple to use microOLED displays for its 1st-Gen MR Headset from Sony and LG Display for its 2nd-Gen Device.”

Our report stated that “Cupertino is expected to use Sony’s MicroOLED panel for the screen on its first MR device while the outer screen, or an 'indicator', which will be a regular OLED panel, will be provided by LG Display. Apple’s new device is expected to launch during the first half of next year. LG Display is aiming to supply the MicroOLED panel on the iPhone maker's follow-up to its MR device.”
